Liverpool have to trigger Dominik Szoboszlai’s release clause today, or risk being unable to sign him until January.
That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has underlined the importance of paying the clause, rather than negotiating a fee with RB Leipzig. Speaking on his YouTube channel last night, Romano said that Liverpool are ‘discussing internally’ whether or not to pay the £60m figure.
“Lot of rumours about Liverpool midfielders,” began the transfer expert. “We know they have an interest in Khephren Thuram who remains in the list but also in Dominik Szoboszlai, he’s in the list for sure.

“He’s a player they really appreciate, one of the big targets. But they have to decide internally if they want to pay want RB Leipzig want or not. It’s up to Liverpool now, it’s up to internal discussions.
“What is important to mention, the release clause, €70m [£60m], is only valid in June, not in July. If they want to pay the clause in July, the player can only move in January. So if they want to trigger the clause it has to be now and by the end of June. Otherwise it has to be a negotiation with Leipzig. This is obviously a possibility, but it’s not going to be an easy one. But Liverpool are still discussing about Dominik Szoboszlai as an option.
“For Newcastle it’s now complicated after they spent big money on Sandro Tonali. They love Szoboszlai but it’s not easy in terms of budget.”
Liverpool weighing up Szoboszlai bid
Well, all things told, this could end up being an exciting day for Liverpool fans. It’s nice to have a deadline like this, it means the Reds have to decide one way or another.
Personally, we can’t see Liverpool making any kind of concrete move on the final day of a clause being active. If they were to sign off on Szoboszlai for £60m, they’d have already done it.
It’s also interesting to hear that the clause is technically still active for a January move. But we can’t see that being appealing to Jurgen Klopp either.

So, if the Reds want their man, we think they’ll wait for the clause to pass, and then hit Leipzig with a lower offer.
As Romano says, Newcastle appear to be the only other club seriously in for Szoboszlai at this stage. And by the sounds of things, they may no longer be serious competition for Liverpool.
With the player himself having spoken glowingly of working with Klopp, and with just two years left on his contract, that could put the Reds in a strong position.
As ever, they’ll do things on their own terms in the market. Unless another club comes out of nowhere to pay the £60m, we can’t see that changing here.
