Liverpool’s interest in RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is more genuine than Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
The Reds emerged as slightly surprise contenders to sign Szoboszlai yesterday. Up until now, Newcastle had been seen as the most likely candidates to sign the 22-year-old.
However, according to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Liverpool have now moved ahead of the Magpies as a realistic suitor.

“In terms of Liverpool, I think central midfield remains the priority. They let James Milner go and Naby Keita as well,” Crook began.
“There is loose talk of Szoboszlai at RB Leipzig. That would take big money. I do think Liverpool’s interest in him is more genuine than Newcastle’s, who’ve also been mentioned as part of that conversation.”
Liverpool leading Newcastle race
This obviously sounds like positive news for Liverpool in their hunt to sign Szoboszlai. Just yesterday, the fight between them and Newcastle was described as being an ‘English duel’ by Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze.
If Eddie Howe’s side really are in for the ‘incredible’ Leipzig player, then there’ll be a real threat to the Reds.
Gone are the days when Liverpool could easily swat aside interest from clubs outside of the Premier League’s ‘big six.’

With Newcastle taking the Reds’ spot in next season’s Champions League, they now have real leverage. As the Saudi project clunks into life in the North East, they’ve become huge players in the transfer market.
As a result, their interest in Szoboszlai should be taken seriously. Having already paid big money to sign Sandro Tonali though, perhaps the well is running dry.
Crook’s assertion that the Leipzig would ask for a massive fee to sell Szoboszlai is interesting. The Hungary international has a release clause in his contract active until tomorrow, so there is framework for a price already in place.
With that expiring by the weekend though, it doesn’t look like either side will activate it. Whether an eventual fee would then be more or less than the £60m clause, only Leipzig will know.
