Rennes will allow reported Liverpool target Jeremy Doku to leave the club this summer.

Doku’s name has been thrown around in connection to Liverpool for years now. Once again, with the summer window in progress, the Reds have been said to have ‘strong’ interest in the Belgian.

And according to L’Equipe via Get French Football News, there could have just been some good news to that effect.

They claim that Rennes are happy to allow Doku to depart after three years in France. Although no clubs are specifically mentioned by the French publication, the 21-year-old is said to be attracting plenty of interest from the Premier League.

But although they’re happy to sell him, that doesn’t mean Rennes will let him go on the cheap. They’ll reportedly ask for around £43m to let him leave Roazhon Park.

Rennes allow Doku to leave

Although Liverpool have seemingly been tracking Doku for years, now doesn’t necessarily feel like the right time to go for him.

He’s had a slightly difficult couple of years in France and hasn’t progressed quite as he might have. The Reds also don’t really need too much in the way of forwards right now.

If he moves to Anfield at this point, he isn’t going to get in the team. That’s only going to derail his development further.

Nevertheless, it’s still something we could see Liverpool potentially doing. £43m sounds a fair whack to pay for a player who wouldn’t be first choice though, so the price would have to come down.

But with Rennes open to letting Doku go, you’d back Jorg Schmadtke to come to an agreement on lower terms.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the Ligue 1 side spent around £22m on the forward in 2021, though. There’s only so low they’ll go.

As Liverpool look to tie up a deal for Dominik Szoboszlai today, their midfield rebuild is almost complete. If they do decide to strengthen other positions after that, Doku could well be on the docket.
