Liverpool are hoping that they can use RB Leipzig’s interest in Fabio Carvalho to help them sign Dominik Szoboszlai.

News has been breaking quickly today, as Liverpool try to beat the clock to sign Szoboszlai. With his £60m release clause reportedly set to expire at midnight, the Reds are trying to get a deal done.

One of the outlets covering Liverpool’s race against time are Sky Sports. And they claim that as Jurgen Klopp looks to push through a deal to sign the Hungarian, he’s hoping that Carvalho can act as ‘leverage.’

Leipzig announced the signing of the Liverpool youngster on-loan earlier today, so it isn’t an on-going thing. Sky also are at pains to point out that the two negotiations have been happening independently of each other.

However, that won’t stop the Reds in believing that talks over Carvalho can help them with Szoboszlai. Leipzig are reportedly keen to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent basis, so perhaps Liverpool leaning into that can help them.

Liverpool looking for Carvalho leverage

In reality, Liverpool shouldn’t need the Carvalho deal to help them out here. Szoboszlai has reportedly already ‘made it clear’ that he wants to sign for the Reds.

With a release clause in his contract, Liverpool also don’t have to negotiate directly with Leipzig.

So, the only reason they’d be looking to factor in the fact that the German side want one of their players is if they are trying to lower the fee.

Given what we know about the way Liverpool operate in the market, this wouldn’t be a surprise at all.

They generally have a good relationship with Leipzig having signed Naby Keita and Ibrahima Konate from them in the past. They’ve also done business with sister club RB Salzburg, too.

It’s also worth remembering that Liverpool brought in Jorg Schmadtke for his relationships in German football. This could have been one they’ve been working on for a while now.

Put all of those things together, and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the Reds have whittled down Szoboszlai’s fee a little.
