Stan Collymore says ‘world-class’ Liverpool star could well be the best around in his position

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is one of the best left-backs in world football right now.

That’s the view of former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore. Speaking to CaughtOffside after this weekend’s international games, Collymore praised the performance of Robertson for Scotland, as he shackled Erling Haaland of Norway.

Andy Robertson was exceptional, absolutely world-class,” raved the pundit, who felt Haaland’s star billing would have rankled the Liverpool man.

“The game was built up in a way that meant Erling Haaland was the centre of attention,” Collymore said. “It was almost like there was no way Norway were going to lose while Haaland was on the pitch and that would have annoyed Robertson like you wouldn’t believe.

“Of course, Haaland is going to get a lot of attention, he’s his country’s best player and he’s just won the treble with Manchester City. But Robertson has won it all too. He’s not a nobody. He’s also playing for one of the biggest clubs in Europe and is arguably one of, if not the, best in the world in his position.”

Robertson one of the best around

Saturday was a big moment for Robertson. A dramatic win away it Norway made in three wins from three in their Euro 2024 qualification group.

They’ll go into tonight’s clash with Georgia with supreme confidence and the expectation of another three points.

As the captain of his nation, this will mean a great deal to Robertson. So often under-appreciated by Scotland fans, they’re perhaps finally getting to see Robbo’s true self.

As Liverpool supporters, we’ve been seeing that for the past six years. Right from his Man of the Match debut against Crystal Palace right up to the present day, the 29-year-old has shone continuously.

It remains an oddity that Robertson has never really been honoured individually. Despite plenty of his teammates earning nominations, he’s never made the short list for the Ballon d’Or, for example.

He has made the PFA Team of the Year on two occasions, and the Champions League equivalent once. But it still doesn’t feel enough for a player who’s been one of the best in Europe for a long while now.

None of that is unlikely to bother Robbo. He’s an uncompromising individual who won’t crave the attention. Still, it’s nice to see him get his dues for once.
