Virgil Van Dijk shares what he wants Liverpool to do in the transfer window, after signing Mac Allister

Virgil van Dijk has admitted that he hopes Liverpool still have business to do in the transfer market, after signing Alexis Mac Allister.

Mac Allister became the Reds first signing of the summer last week. It looks like a brilliant buy from the club, and will hopefully solve a number of issues in the Liverpool midfield.

But this being the summer window, eyes are already on what the Reds will do next. And speaking to Sky Sports whilst on international duty with the Netherlands, Van Dijk said he’s also hoping for more arrivals at Anfield.

“I think he’s [Mac Allister] a very good player,” said the centre-back. “Obviously we’ve played against him many times, also with Holland against Argentina. I think he definitely will be a big addition and something we need in order to be back where we all wanted to be.

“So, it’s a good start to the transfer window. Hopefully we get a couple more quality additions. But he’s definitely one of the players who can make a difference for us in the next couple of years.”

Van Dijk calls for more arrivals

As Mac Allister has joined with his new teammates all either on holiday or with their national teams, he hasn’t met up with them yet.

Subsequently, this is actually the first time we’ve heard a Liverpool player publicly comment on the 24-year-old’s arrival.

Van Dijk has been quite a vocal advocate for the Reds doing big business this summer. He’s spoken a number of times about the need for arrivals ahead of next season.

So, it isn’t a surprise to hear Liverpool’s No.4 be the one to break the silence. Yet, you get the impression that this won’t fully satisfy Van Dijk.

Thankfully for him, it does appear that the Reds are pushing on with a couple of other deals this summer. Khephren Thuram looks like perhaps the most likely to join Mac Allister right now, but the likes of Manu Kone and Gabri Veiga are also being heavily linked.

Supporters would maybe like to see something a little more concrete in the coming days, as the clock begins to tick down to pre-season. Until that happens, there will be a mild concern that Liverpool will rest on their laurels again.

With the likes of Van Dijk leading the calls for more though, there’ll surely be two or three others to come. Before all that, we’d like to be a fly on the wall when Virgil and Alexis discuss Argentina’s feisty World Cup quarter-final win over the Netherlands back in December. No doubt it’ll be on both of their minds! Time to make up, lads.
