Liverpool are unlikely to follow up initial interest in Mason Mount, after signing Alexis Mac Allister this morning.

The Reds confirmed the arrival of Mac Allister, who will wear the No.10 shirt at Anfield. Adding a little more information on the Argentine’s arrival, The Guardian claim that Liverpool are set to exit the race for Mount.

With a new midfielder already through the door, Jurgen Klopp is reportedly ‘not expected’ to follow up their interest in the Chelsea man with an offer.

However, that doesn’t mean Liverpool are finished with their midfield overhaul. The Guardian report that French pair Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram are ‘of interest’ to the Reds.

Whoever ends up coming in though, this looks like the end of the line for Liverpool and Mount.

Liverpool end Mount pursuit

For a long time leading up to this summer transfer window, it looked likely that Liverpool would sign Mason Mount.

But other clubs – namely Manchester United – have since jumped ahead of them in the queue. Since then, the chances of the England man ending up at Anfield have grown more remote.

With Mac Allister now tied up, it’s clear that Mount was actually an alternative to the Argentina international, rather than in addition to.

They are both fairly similar players, capable of playing in a number of roles in midfield, and potentially further forward.

But with United being quoted big numbers for Mount, it makes sense for Liverpool to go for Mac Allister instead. The final fee for the 24-year-old remains undisclosed, but is said to be in the region of £35m. A real bargain.

Given the numbers being talked about, United, or someone else, could end up paying twice that for Mount.

So, now we turn to other targets. Liverpool certainly aren’t done. As fans lap up all the Mac Allister content they can get their paws on, the Reds look set for an all-out assault to get either, or both, of Kone and Thuram.
