Reported Liverpool target Moises Caicedo has a gentleman’s agreement with Brighton to let him leave the club this summer.

Caicedo has long been seen as a possible midfield option for Liverpool. His ‘incredible’ displays since joining the Seagulls have marked him out as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League. But with a reported £100m price-tag on his head, he has looked out of the Reds’ reach.

Now though, journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed on his YouTube channel that Caicedo will actually be available for much less than that.

“I heard something about £100m value for Caicedo, no. The idea from sources I spoke to is that Caciedo is going to be worth maybe £70m, £80m, no more than this,” began the transfer expert. “Also because there is a pact between Caicedo and Roberto De Zerbi. He will be able to leave the club this summer in case they receive an important proposal.

“De Zerbi promised that to the player when they turned down proposals from Arsenal and this remains valid. So Caicedo is really convinced he will leave Brighton this summer. On the player’s side the idea is to leave, the idea is to go. Caicedo wants a new opportunity.”

Caicedo expecting Brighton exit

Romano does actually go on to say that Chelsea are the team leading the race for Caicedo at the moment. With Arsenal and Manchester United hot on their heels, Liverpool don’t even get a mention.

That isn’t necessarily a surprise. Even though the fee the journalist throws out is less than the initial one rumoured, it still looks high for the Reds to consider.

Earlier this week, they were mentioned as a team who couldn’t be discounted in the race for Caicedo. But that was said to be dependent on how much the Ecuadorian would eventually end up costing.

Although it could in essence be cheaper than the base £70m Romano mentions, you feel it would have to drop a lot still.

Nevertheless, Brighton have backed themselves into a slightly precarious position. Caicedo himself appeared desperate to leave the Amex in January, even going as far as putting out a public plea for them to let him leave.

Clearly not afraid to voice his concerns, they’ll have to be careful not to price the 21-year-old out of a move.

With that in mind, Brighton actually may not hold a great deal of negotiating power here. Clubs may hold on later into the window to unsettle Caicedo and force the Seagulls into accepting a lower offer. If that comes to pass, maybe Liverpool will be at the table. For now, they seem to be watching on with interest.
