Liverpool could be ones to watch in the race to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer.

The Reds have long been linked with a move for Caicedo as part of their midfield rebuild during this off-season. But reports last week suggested that Liverpool were never seriously considering the Ecuadorian, largely because of his asking-price.

But now, according to The Telegraph, there’s a feeling that the Reds may still be pondering a bid. They claim that the imminent arrival of Caicedo’s Brighton teammate Alexis Mac Allister won’t be a barrier to that happening.

If they do decide to enter the fray though, they’ll reportedly do so alongside Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. That trio’s interest looks to be more concrete, although Arsenal are claimed to be prioritising a move for Declan Rice over Caicedo.

In Liverpool’s case, any potential offer is said to be dependent on the finances involved. With Brighton reportedly set to ask for ‘significantly more’ than £70m though, the feeling is that this will have to drop a long way before the Reds show their hand.

For a portion of Liverpool supporters, Caicedo would actually be a much more important addition than his soon-to-be-former colleague, Mac Allister.

His skillset could potentially be of greater use to the Reds than the Argentine’s. But, unfortunately, Caicedo’s price reflects that, too.

Liverpool are set to get themselves a bargain with Mac Allister. A release clause in the 24-year-old’s contract removed the need to negotiate with the notoriously stubborn Brighton.

In Caciedo’s case though, there is seemingly no such clause. Interested clubs will have to do things the hard way.

During a window where Liverpool are prioritising value for money, and also getting deals done quickly, you can see why they’d be put off by Caicedo.

But with the player available at the right price, and with no clear favourite emerging, they’re wise to monitor the situation.

For now, we expect that’s all they’ll do. We can’t see why Brighton would budge on price with Caicedo attracting so much interest. If no club meets their asking price, they’ll happily keep him for another year at least. We’d keep an eye on this, but other target seem much more likely to join right now.
