Jurgen Klopp is putting pressure on Liverpool owners FSG to sign Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer.

Barella is reportedly one of Liverpool’s targets as they look to strengthen their midfield over the coming months. And according to Italian outlet Inter Live, Klopp is the one really pushing for the move.

They claim that the Reds boss has been talking about Barella ‘constantly’ ahead of what’s likely to be a busy summer for Liverpool.

Furthermore, Jurgen is said to have asked FSG for an ‘effort’ to be made in bringing the Inter player to Anfield.

From the Italian’s point of view, they reportedly don’t want to lose Barella. However, it’s claimed that the riches of the Premier League may be too hard to resist for both player and club. As well as Liverpool, both Newcastle United and Arsenal are said to be preparing a bid of around £70m for the 26-year-old.

Barella unlikely to arrive at Anfield

No matter how often Liverpool are linked with a move for Barella, it just doesn’t seem like happening. Call us pessimists, but we don’t see the Italy international wanting to leave his homeland.

It remains a bizarre quirk of the Premier League that only one Italian has ever lifted the trophy as a player. That was Mario Balotelli with Manchester City in 2012. Since then, a number of stars from the Peninsula have graced the division. But the top Italians usually remain in Serie A.

Barella certainly falls into that category. He’s a mainstay in the midfield of both Inter and the Azzurri. With 43 caps now to his name, he’s a big cheese. As a result, we just can’t see him leaving Inter.

A Scudetto winner in 2021 and a Coppa Italia champion the following year, he’s winning trophies with one of the biggest clubs in the country. He’ll now get the chance to add a Champions League title to that list having qualified for the final last night. If that wasn’t enough, Inter are once again in their nation’s cup final. So, really, there isn’t a great need for him to move on.

The one caveat to that is if Inter could do with the cash. They do have some financial troubles and perhaps a good offer would get them and Barella to the table.

If there is a hint of a chance at doing that, then Liverpool should listen to Klopp and have a good go. None other than Steven Gerrard can count himself among Barella’s biggest fans. The former Reds captain called the midfielder ‘potentially world-class’ back in March.

If he’s good enough for Stevie and Jurgen, he’s certainly good enough for us. But we’d approach this one with caution.
