Liverpool scouts have been monitoring OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo ahead of a potential move.

The Reds have recently been credited with an interest in Todibo as they look for a new defender this summer. And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, they do indeed have the 23-year-old on their radar.

“Understand Newcastle, Manchester Utd and Liverpool scouts were in attendance at Nice-Rennes game to monitor Jean Clair Todibo,” Romano wrote on Twitter.

“French centre back could get top club move in the summer — with price tag understood to be around €45m [£39.2m].

With interest from other Premier League sides hotting up, maybe Liverpool will have to make their move quickly.

Liverpool watching Nice pair

If rumours are to be believed, Liverpool would also have had another reason to watch Nice in action last Saturday. The Reds are said to be very keen on Todibo’s teammate Khephren Thuram, too. Both played 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over Rennes.

For now, most Liverpool supporters would probably have Thuram down as the more interesting prospect.

Jurgen Klopp needs a midfielder more than a centre-back at the moment. Thuram’s profile as a rangy, athletic box-to-box player is also something the Reds are missing in the squad.

But the need to add a defender some time soon can’t be ignored either. With Joel Matip potentially moving on and heading into the last year of his deal anyway, Liverpool have to start getting their ducks in a row.

To that end, they’ve been linked with a whole host of up and coming centre-backs. There is a standout option there – RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol – but he’s likely to be out of Liverpool’s price range this summer.

Beyond Gvardiol, the likes of Goncalo Inacio, Antonio Silva, Evan Ndicka and Todibo would all look like solid enough additions.

With a reasonable price-tag reportedly on his head, perhaps the 6ft 3in Todibo will end up getting the nod. Maybe Liverpool’s talent-spotters will be back in Nice again before the season is out.
