Liverpool have been in touch with OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo over a potential transfer this summer.
That’s according to a report from L’Equipe today. They claim that the Reds are one of a handful of clubs to have made contact with the 23-year-old over a move.
From the Premier League, Newcastle and Manchester United are said to be Liverpool’s competition. Meanwhile, Juventus and Napoli are also reportedly already in conversation with Todibo.
Nice are claimed to have set an initial asking-price of around £26.4m for the centre-back. However they’re reportedly hoping to get closer to £35m.
With so many clubs interested in signing him, Todibo is said to be willing to take his time over choosing the best project.
Liverpool hoping to lure Todibo to Merseyside
As Liverpool look to bolster their defence this summer, Todibo would be an interesting option. Despite being just twenty-three, he’s already on the fifth club of his senior career.
Granted, two of those have been on-loan after signing for Barcelona from Nice. Nevertheless, Todibo’s list of clubs is quite impressive. Having come through the academy at Toulouse, he then joined Barca in 2019.
He made just five appearances for the Catalan’s over 18 months, before taking in an unproductive loan move to Schalke during 2019/2020. He then joined Benfica temporarily, but played just twice in the first half of 2020/21.
The second part of that same season finally saw him settle down, as he enjoyed a run in the team at Nice.
Having done well in the south of France, Todibo was on the market in the summer of 2021. Eventually, the France U20 international joined Nice on a permanent basis. But before he did, Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton reportedly tried to sign him. Sport claim that the Toffees even had a £22.5m bid rejected.
Had Todibo ended up at Goodison Park, there’s no way he’d be on his way to Liverpool two years later. Now though, he could be a serious option for them. Good price and good potential, two boxes very much ticked for the Reds.
A call-up to the latest France squad in March underlines the talent Todibo possesses. Liverpool already have one of Didier Deschamps most coveted centre-backs. Why not go out and get another?
