Reported Liverpool transfer target Gavi has been urged to remain at Barcelona this summer.

Gavi has been subject to a contract dispute between Barcelona and La Liga, with suggestions that it could end with the 18-year-old leaving Camp Nou.

Should that happen, it’s been reported that Liverpool would be one of the sides in the running to sign Gavi. However, as per quotes from 90min, Barca manager Xavi has claimed that the Spain international will only be happy at his current club.

“I don’t think Gavi would be happy at a different club,” said the 38-year-old. “He has everything here at eighteen and is an important player for the team. I think his future is here at the club.”

Ultimately, the decision that he has to leave his boyhood club may be taken out of Gavi’s hands. This remains an interesting one to follow.

Gavi future still less than clear

Of late, Chelsea has been rumoured to be a more likely destination for Gavi than Liverpool. But with the Reds clearly looking for midfield upgrades, he should be a name they’re looking at.

In truth, it’s probably wise to be looking on from a distance – for now. Whatever the administrative problems the La Masia graduate is suffering, you still get the feeling that he’ll end up staying in Catalonia.

But La Liga already claimed a win by ensuring his shirt number be changed from 6 to 30 recently. If they get their way Gavi will be available to sign for another club without a transfer fee this summer.

If that does end up being the case, then Liverpool have to be in the mix. It’s incredibly rare to have the chance to sign a potentially world-class young player for nothing.

Having passed up on the opportunity to sign Jude Bellingham due to the high cost, there would be no excuse to pass up on Gavi.

Of course, they wouldn’t be the only ones jostling to sign him. Every top team from around Europe would be throwing their hats into the ring. In that climate, it’s tricky to see why Gavi would choose Liverpool right now. But although the Reds might not be the most appealing choice right now, we’re sure the teenager would find his happiness on Merseyside.
