Liverpool are starting to believe that they could sign Barcelona midfielder Gavi on a free transfer this summer.
Gavi has long been seen as a possible option for the Reds in Jurgen Klopp’s bid to upgrade his midfield. But the 18-year-old signing a new deal at Barca recently appeared to end that hope.
Now though, according to The Times, fresh hope has been provided. They claim that there is a real chance that Gavi’s new deal could be declared ‘null and void.’ A Spanish court reportedly ruled on Monday that the contract is in breach of La Liga’s financial rules. If upheld, this would make the Spain international available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
To that end, it’s claimed that both Liverpool and Manchester City are ‘keeping an eye’ on the ‘increasingly messy’ situation. Both are said to be long-term admirers of Gavi, with the Reds even reportedly enquiring about signing him last summer.
The youngster’s contract extension appeared to put an end to that dream. However, this latest twist is claimed to have ‘encouraged’ interested clubs that they really could snatch Gavi away from Camp Nou.
We’ll believe it when we see it
What is going on at Barcelona? Their financial troubles seem endless and yet they seemingly won’t ever acknowledge the reality of them.
Admittedly, why would they? They readily escape any kind of tangible punishment or repercussions. Save for Lionel Messi effectively being forced out of the club, they appear to have carte blanche to sweep any financial issues under the rug. As a result, we’d still be surprised to see Gavi end up leaving.
But having said that, Messi did end up having to leave. The Argentine wanted to stay, Barca wanted to keep him, but La Liga rules dictated that that wasn’t possible. For once they stood firm.
So, if that can happen to Messi at Barcelona, then it can surely happen to anyone. Gavi included.
If the teenager really is available, then Liverpool should be absolutely all over him. There’s a reason former Reds captain Jamie Redknapp has been blown away by him. At eighteen, Gavi has been a fixture in the Barcelona midfield for a season-and-a-half. He truly is a phenomenon.
Imagine if Liverpool could tie up him and Bellingham in the summer? The £130m on Jude would be well worth it if Gavi was brought in for nothing. The Reds midfield would be set for the next decade.
