Charlie Adam insists 32-year-old Liverpool star is not finished, he can play for years yet

Jordan Henderson is capable of playing on and winning trophies with Liverpool for many years to come.

That’s the view of former Reds midfielder Charlie Adam. Speaking to The Mirror this weekend, Adam gave his thoughts on his old Liverpool teammate’s career.

“Over the years, he’s [Henderson] progressed to become a leader and a vocal voice in the Premier League – in terms of what he’s done through the pandemic and what he’s done for his country. It’s been unbelievable,” said the retired Scotland international.

“Whoever replaced Steven Gerrard as captain was always going to be difficult, but you can do it in different ways. I think Jordan has led Liverpool extremely well; I think he’s been a real leader and captain. He’s a lad who’s put everything into his career. He’s been dedicated for a number of years, and he’s been rewarded with such a wonderful career.

“But I don’t believe he’s stopping. I think he’s still got a lot [of time] to go and still got a lot to give to Liverpool. He’s been magnificent… the longer he stays at Liverpool, the more success they will have.”

Henderson still part of Klopp’s plans

As Henderson ably showed with his performance for England yesterday, he really does still have a lot to offer.

At times for Liverpool this season, it hasn’t always looked like that. But with the rest of the team also dropping their levels alarmingly, perhaps this is something of a false reading.

With the Reds set to add a couple of new faces to the midfield this summer, it’ll be interesting to see how Henderson features next season.

Turning thirty-three in June, the skipper is surely set for more of a bit-part role than he’s become used to. That doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing, though. As James Milner has ably shown, you can still make yourself mightily useful without playing every week.

Having filled that role for quite a few years now, Milner now looks set to depart at the end of the season. Once he does, it feels right that Henderson should be the one to step into that mantle.

Fiercely competitive, the former Sunderland man will believe that he should be starting, no matter who Liverpool bring in. It’s that kind of drive that has seen him have the career that he’s had. It also means that whether he’s in the XI or not, he’s still got so much to give Liverpool.
