Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been praised for a good display whilst playing for England yesterday.
Having sat out of Thursday’s win over Italy, Gareth Southgate restored Henderson to the line-up for Sunday’s clash with Ukraine.
The Liverpool midfielder ended up playing the full 90 minutes, as England ran out 2-0 winners. It was a productive afternoon for Henderson, who picked up a simple assist for a long-range Bukayo Saka strike.
Recognising his ‘energetic’ display, Sky Sports gave the 32-year-old as seven out of ten. Described as an ‘incredibly safe pair of hands,’ Henderson was deemed to have ‘produced a couple of really inviting crosses.’
Both The I and The Guardian also served the Reds man the same score. Both praise Henderson’s pressing ability, with The Guardian also lauding the veteran for a ‘clever backheel’ at one stage.
Henderson still crucial to club and country
If some fans had got their way, Henderson would have been jettisoned from this England team a long time ago. With Southgate introducing plenty of younger players to the squad, the Liverpool star’s face didn’t seem to fit.
Thankfully though, Henderson is the one Liverpool player that Southgate seems to really and fully trust.
And why wouldn’t he? Despite what his critics will have you believe, Hendo still has plenty to offer. Look through England’s midfield options and he’s still more than deserving of being a prominent player for his country.
Obviously, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are the clear future of the Three Lions’ midfield. But beyond that talented pair, the pickings are a little slim for Southgate.
When you match his ability with his experience and leadership, it’s an absolute no-brainer to keep Henderson around.
We haven’t always seen his best in a Liverpool shirt this season, but yesterday was a little more promising. Hopefully the skipper returns to Anfield in good shape and ready for a big top-four push.
