Martin Skrtel has said Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar would have been the perfect signing for Liverpool, though the centre-back has an agreement to join PSG at the end of this season.
Speaking to the Athletic, the former Anfield hero named his Slovakian countryman as the ideal defensive addition for Liverpool this summer, with Skriniar linked with a move to Merseyside before PSG swooped in with an agreement to sign the 28-year-old Serie A star.
Skriniar said when asked about Liverpool’s defensive options: “Don’t forget, Virgil van Dijk is still one of the best defenders in the world. Then there’s Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, as well as Konate, so Liverpool have good players in that position.
“But if you asked me to pick one other excellent centre-back, it would be Milan Skriniar. Unfortunately, he’s not available as he’s already agreed to move from Inter to PSG but he would be great for Liverpool if he was available.”
With Liverpool struggling at the back this season, adding a player as good as Skriniar to their ranks would be an incredible move for the club, with the Slovakian international regarded by many as one of the best centre-backs in world football.
Indeed, Liverpool seemingly tried to make a late move to sign Skriniar. However, as we know, PSG simply got their first to the Inter defender, and Skrtel’s dream of seeing another Slovak play for the Anfield giants will have to wait that little bit longer.
Liverpool should had followed Skrtel’s advice and sign Skriniar
Liverpool’s leaky record this season has surprised many this season, with Virgil van Dijk struggling for form and Joel Matip looking like half the player the Cameroonian was last campaign, and the Reds should had followed Skrtel’s advice and signed Skriniar when they had the chance.
As we know, Skriniar has been a star for Inter in recent years and has rightly been converted as one of the most attractive defensive signings in the past 12 months. Yet with PSG securing the 28-year-old’s signature, Liverpool will never know what it is like to have the Slovakian playing under Jurgen Klopp.
