Liverpool transfer news: Reds given last-minute chance to sign defender

Liverpool have been given a last-minute chance to sign a top-class player in this transfer window, the latest news suggests. The Reds don’t have long to act.

Gazzetta Dello Sport reports that Inter want to sell Milan Skriniar before the end of the transfer window. As things stand, they’ll lose the player for free at the end of the season – something they can’t afford.

In fact, selling Skriniar would have fantastic benefits. The money would prevent further sales in the summer, allowing Inter to strengthen their squad. But it won’t be easy.

Skriniar already has an agreement to move to Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract. Selling him now would necessitate him breaking that agreement to move immediately – unless PSG themselves front the cash.

Inter would accept as little as £14m for their star defender. Clubs have a chance to lure him away from that PSG deal, then, but that’s not exactly a simple task.

Liverpool transfer news – Milan Skriniar

90min have pushed the idea that Liverpool like Skriniar. The claim is that they’re surprised he’s even available on a free transfer and may attempt to persuade him to move to Anfield.

Though, they’re far from alone in that desire. Skriniar – once described as ‘top-class’ by Inter’s Beppe Marotta – is a fantastic player available for nothing.

Or, alternatively, available for around £14m. That’s still a bargain deal, even with only six months left on his contract.

But if we’re real here, the chances of Liverpool doing this are very slim. Centre-back isn’t an immediate cause for concern, while any contract offer would need to be gigantic. You’re hoping he rejects the wages PSG offer him, after all – wages they’re paying without a transfer fee.

And so we wouldn’t get our hopes up about this one unless Liverpool rate Skriniar spectacularly highly. In that case, perhaps they would make a late offer in this transfer window. After all, how often does a player this good come about for £14m? It’ll be tempting at the very least.
