Liverpool are still fully intent on signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham this summer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Speaking on The Done Deal Show for The Football Terrace, the reporter suggested the Reds remain fully committed to landing the 19-year-old, despite claims it is becoming an increasingly unrealistic possibility.

“With Liverpool, perhaps things have changed a little bit, and obviously if they don’t have Champions League football, their budget will be affected as well,” said Jacobs.

“But make no mistake, they’re not out of this race at all. There has always been a drive at the Liverpool end to try and sign Jude Bellingham and there’s been different degrees of confidence over the course of the last six months or so.

“As a result, we still cannot rule Liverpool out of the race for Jude Bellingham, even though the excellent David Ornstein said that the move is looking less likely now than a few months ago, and I think that’s accurate to an extent. But things change, and as a result, Liverpool will be there. They’re not walking away and looking at other targets – still on the radar.

“If they get blown out the water financially, if they don’t have Champions League football, if their budget goes down as a result, then of course they become on the back foot.

“I still think Manchester City [and] Real Madrid. I would still say Liverpool [as well], [they] are the three that are there, but don’t rule out Manchester United.”

Liverpool remain in the mix for Bellingham

As Jacob mentions, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has recently claimed that Liverpool are increasingly unlikely to sign Bellingham this summer.

He attributes this to the club’s financial position, and the strength of both Man City and Real Madrid. However, this argument still baffles us.

It has always been known that Dortmund will require in excess of £100m to let go of the England international.

As one of the most talented prospects in all of football, having been hailed as ‘incredible’ by Trent Alexander-Arnold, this was established even before Liverpool were touted as the front-runners.

It was even suggested the club had put the necessary funds aside, in order to wait and sign the midfielder a year down the line.

Therefore, the suggestion that Liverpool can no longer financially compete for Bellingham is simply an excuse being used by FSG – and one which should not be accepted.
