Luis Diaz has responded to Darwin Nunez’s recent claim that he is absolutely key to Liverpool’s hopes of rescuing their season.
Nunez said that his Colombian teammate is ‘fundamental’ to the way Liverpool play. Asked about those comments by Sky Sports today, Diaz was typically humble.
“Yes, I saw what he said [that I am badly missed]. Yes, it’s important to be back but it’s not only me. The idea is to be back and help the team with all the other players. I want to be back and make a good second half of the season,” said the 26-year-old.
Wit those ‘other players’ now more or less returning to training, Liverpool are only really waiting on Diaz. As Darwin says though, he’s the one who you feel could really be the difference maker. It shouldn’t be tool long now, but the wait for Lucho goes on.
Liverpool craving Nunez/Diaz link-up
Nunez and Diaz have clearly struck up a good understanding off the pitch. Both from similar backgrounds, they also arrived at Liverpool after impressing in Portugal.
Although they were on different sides of the Porto/Benfica divide, that doesn’t seem to have mattered.
It may not be pleasing to fans of both of those clubs, but it’s great from a Liverpool persepctive.
The only disappointment is that this relationship hasn’t been given the chance to blossom properly on the pitch. There were signs that it was getting there during Diaz’s last game for the Reds to date, though.
He and Darwin linked up beautifully to notch the equaliser at the Emirates Stadium in October.
That goal showcased the problems the South American duo can cause for teams when on-song. Diaz’s pace and quick-thinking coupled with Nunez’s laser-sharp movement is a recipe that not many will live with.
Hopefully we can see that link-up return on the pitch very soon, with a little Cody Gakpo thrown in too.
Those three, along with Diogo Jota, represent the future of the Liverpool attack. If they can all stay fit through the second part of the season, it’ll set us up nicely for next year.
