Liverpool have been urged to throw their hat in the ring to sign Chelsea midfielder NâGolo Kante on a free transfer.
Kante is out of contract this summer, with a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge hanging in the balance. As we all know, Liverpool need midfield reinforcements. And speaking to ESPN FC, former Red Steve Nicol suggested that Kante could be the answer.
âIf I am a coach of the best team on the planet, and heâs [Kante] available, then I want to sign him,â said Nicol. âThere are certain things that you take a chance on in football, and this is one of them.
âYou know exactly what you are getting when he is fit. You know you are getting a player, a gentleman and an experienced winner. Heâs the whole package. The nicest guy in the world. Fantastic in the dressing room. You are getting everything.
âThe question is, the fitness side of it, but itâs worth a gamble. If I am Madrid, Man City, Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern, or any of the so-called big guys. If this guy is on a free, then I am signing him.â
Thatâs all well and good, but Kante has played just twice in the Premier League all season. Heâs a legendary figure but now thirty-one, he looks like a spent force. Do Liverpool really need another injury prone midfielder? Weâll let you answer that.
Liverpool looking for summer bargains
With Liverpool seemingly putting funds aside in preparation of a huge move for Jude Bellingham, they might have to pick up some value signings.
Theyâre not Chelsea. The Reds canât and wonât just throw money at targets and see what sticks.
But thereâs no getting away from the fact that Liverpool need more than just Bellingham. As good as the 19-year-old is, the problems run far deeper than bringing in one superstar player to fix it. No, Liverpool need three, perhaps even four new midfielders.
As a result, theyâre going to have to get smart. Matheus Nunes seems to be the most likely candidate to come in as another potential starter in the middle of the pitch this summer. Seeing as the Wolves man could cost upwards of ÂŁ55m though, thatâll blow another hole in the budget.
So, whether they like it or not, Liverpool might have left themselves no choice but to scratch around in the bargain section. Should he fail to sign a new contract at Chelsea, Kante would obviously fit into that category.
On his day, he could even fix Liverpoolâs open midfield by himself. As Graham Potter said earlier this season, he can be âworld-classâ [Football London]. But he isnât the player he was. The Reds should steer clear.
