Trent Alexander-Arnold has insisted that he and Darwin Nunez have built up a really good understanding for Liverpool.
Trent finally supplied Darwin with a first assist of the campaign in the Reds’ last game against Wolves. And speaking via Football Daily, the Reds right-back suggested it had been a long time coming.
“If I’m honest I think that chemistry and understanding has probably been there from early doors this season. It’s so easy when you look at it you think, ‘we’ve had one goal together all season, maybe they just haven’t found the wavelength,'” he explained.
“But if you go back and watch some games or watch the chances created and things like that, I’ve been putting in balls to him from early on in the season, we just haven’t been able to score off them.”
Alexander-Arnold went on to praise his Uruguayan teammate, backing him to soon start finding the net more regularly.
“He’s [Darwin] a player that I think it’s easy to just write him off. It’s easy to say ‘he’s not scoring goals,’ but he’s getting himself into areas and places where he’s able to hurt opposition and that’s all you can really ask.
“We have faith that the goals will start coming. No one here’s thinking about that, we’re all behind him we’re all supporting him and it’s always good to see him on the scoresheet. But as long as the team wins, I think that’s all anyone really cares about.”
Trent finally breaks his duck
The fact that Trent hadn’t set up a goal for Nunez in a Liverpool shirt yet was the least of Jurgen Klopp’s problems this season.
Regardless of that, it was good to finally put that statistic to bed last weekend.
And what a way to do it as well. The ball Alexander-Arnold played over the top of the Wolves defence last Saturday was absolutely trademark Trent. The quality of Nunez’s run matched the pass and the Uruguayan tucked home a beautiful goal.
Hopefully that can become the first of many link-ups between the pair. In theory, Nunez’s runs from the left-sided central forward position should be perfect for Alexander-Arnold to pick out.
The 23-year-old’s movement is as good as any forward in the Premier League. Now that Trent appears to have found his range for the season too, this could be a crucial facet in improving Liverpool’s fortunes.
Again, not that it matters all that much. As Liverpool’s No.66 points out, as long as the Reds win, it doesn’t necessarily make any odds who’s setting up who. But the fact is that Liverpool aren’t currently winning. Improving this particular partnership could increase their chances of getting back to doing so regularly.
