Chelsea may still launch an audacious January move for reported Liverpool transfer target Moises Caicedo.
That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs. Writing for Si & Dan Talk Chelsea via Football London, Jacobs suggested that the Blues could yet try to strike a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion.
“Along with Enzo Fernandez, multiple sources tell me Moises Caicedo is very much on Chelsea’s radar in 2023. Brighton CEO Paul Barber doesn’t want to lose Caicedo (or Alexis Mac Allister) mid-season, but that doesn’t mean Chelsea won’t try,” the journalist reports.
Having muscled their way to the front of the queue for Fernandez, it looks like Chelsea may not be done just yet.
Chelsea out to foil Liverpool again
Chelsea’s transfer strategy since Todd Boehly purchased the club has been all over the place. They appear to just latch on to every other top club’s targets, and money still seems to be no object.
Liverpool have reportedly been pursuing Fernandez for an age, for example. That isn’t to say Chelsea haven’t as well, but they do look to have come out of nowhere for the World Cup winner.
Reportedly offering to pay even more than Fernandez’s release clause to Benfica, he now looks to be on the way to Stamford Bridge.
With his release clause alone standing at more than £100m, there’s no way Liverpool can compete.
Now, there will perhaps be worry at Anfield that Chelsea may pip them to Caicedo too. The Ecuadorian is another who has been linked with Liverpool for a while.
As Jacobs mentions though, Brighton are unwilling to do business this month. Or at least, they’re unwilling to do business at a reasonable fee.
As far as Chelsea are concerned, this doesn’t seem to matter. Should they approach Brighton with an outlandish bid for Caicedo, perhaps the Seagulls bosses will see fit to cash in.
In such a scenario, Liverpool won’t be able to keep up, you can count on that. Caicedo may be ‘exceptional,’ but the Reds won’t go all out. As a result, we’ll just have to hope that the Fernandez cash makes Boehly and co think twice about paying out another enormous fee for.
