Liverpool are one of the many teams to have made a move to sign Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda.
That’s according to Spanish outlet AS, who claim that the Reds have put themselves in the mix to sign the 18-year-old.
Fresneda is said to have unleashed a ‘fever’ across Europe, as teams all over the continent race to snap him up. One of these teams is, reportedly, Liverpool. They, along with eight other Premier League sides are claimed to have ‘positioned themselves’ to sign the teenager.
French club Rennes are said to be another with ideas of signing Fresneda, as well as Roma, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter. The list isn’t done quite there though, because the big boys in Spain – Real Madrid and Barcelona – are also said to be watching him with interest.
This comes after Atletico Madrid reportedly tried to sign the full-back in the summer. Valladolid managed to tie him down to a new contract, though. Now, any club attempting to sign Fresneda will have to be mindful of a £26m release clause.
But clubs may need to act fast. The teenager’s termination clause will jump to £39m if he plays 22 games for the first team. The Spain U19 international has played nine times so far. Interested sides are claimed to value Fresneda at around £13m for the time being.
What about Ramsay?
We’ve got to be honest, Ivan Fresneda isn’t a player who has previously been on our radar. We don’t profess to know a great deal about him.
What we do know is that Liverpool have just signed a talented teenaged right-back to learn from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
We haven’t yet seen the best of Calvin Ramsay owing to injury. But from the flashes he’s shown in a red shirt so far, the 19-year-old has a very bright future.
Given the prices being talked about for Fresneda here, Liverpool will be feeling very smug at having paid barely £8m for Ramsay. So, with so many other sides in the running for the Spaniard, perhaps the Reds can be ruled out of this one.
There are big clubs there – where Liverpool go in the market, Madrid seem to follow. But it feels more likely that Fresneda will end up at one of the middling Premier League sides where he can get more game time.
Prove himself on that stage, and maybe Liverpool will be back in the future. For now though, we’ll happily stick with our Calvin.
