Enzo Fernández or Jude Bellingham – that’s the question facing Liverpool right now. But the Reds might even be feeling greedy.
Liverpool certainly need new midfielders. For starters, the midfield just hasn’t clicked this season and the team would improve with new ideas. That seems as plain as day to everyone watching.
But there are also more undeniable reasons. Jordan Henderson and Thiago, for instance, are both beyond 30 but still stand as the first-choice options. The likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are in their prime years and really should be first-choice, are out of contract this summer.
James Milner is, too, and that leaves Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones as the only long-term pieces. It’s not enough and Liverpool seek to fix that.
Their primary target is quite clearly Jude Bellingham – as it should be. He’s the most desirable midfielder on the planet right now, excelling with Borussia Dortmund and England at just 19.
But he’s not the only option. Enzo Fernández is also shining brightly as a 21-year-old and Liverpool supposedly like him. That’s certainly the message coming out of Argentina today.
Who would actually be the better signing, though?
Enzo Fernández or Jude Bellingham
For us, Bellingham should be the clear no.1 target. He’s arguably at a higher level than Enzo despite being two years younger. On top of that, he’s a homegrown player who could make further transfers easier for a long-term to come.
The only real problem is the price. The Athletic believe he’d cost around £130m – an enormous figure that would smash the British transfer record.
Enzo would be at least £30m cheaper. His release clause is at £100m, per Record, and Benfica may accept less than that. Still, he should be the alternative as the less proven and slightly older player.

There’s a sense building, however, that Liverpool might be feeling greedy. Reports in Argentina claim they have an agreement in principle with Benfica, despite also leading the race for Bellingham.
That comes after claims that Liverpool are only making midfield signings with Bellingham in mind, opting not to buy anyone outright in the summer as they didn’t want to risk that deal. The Reds also do want a second midfielder – but to play with Bellingham.
Could that midfielder be Enzo? It seems ridiculous as the overall cost would soar past £200m. But with midfielders leaving at the end of the year and a desperate need to rebuild, perhaps Liverpool will try to do something unbelievably special.
