‘Worth pointing out’: Journalist shares how Liverpool’s potential takeover could be influenced by PSG

Any potential Qatari takeover of Liverpool would have to be signed off by the owners of Paris Saint-Germain.

There have been strong rumours that a joint Saudi Arabian-Qatari consortium is ready to table a bid for Liverpool. However, writing on Twitter, journalist Ben Jacobs dismissed one prominent potential bidder from the country.

“No truth in rumours circulating that Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al-Thani is leading a bid to buy LFC,” Jacobs wrote. He went on to report that any such bidder would have to ask the PSG owner’s for their ‘blessing.’

“Also worth pointing out any prospective Qatar-based bidder would likely go to QSI for their blessing first even if they aren’t involved (& they definitely won’t be with Liverpool).”

Warning signs clear for Liverpool

For many supporters, this is potentially where things become intolerable in regards to the sale of the club.

Some will feel differently, but we don’t believe that buyers should be having to ask other clubs if they are allowed to buy Liverpool. For a few different reasons, it doesn’t sit right with us.

If that is the case, then where does it end?

Take the current battle for Borussia Dortmund starlet Jude Bellingham. PSG have recently entered the already crowded race, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi publicly admitting he would love to sign the 19-year-old.

Of course, Bellingham is also top of Liverpool’s wish list. If the owners of the Reds were having to be deferential to PSG in terms of taking control of the club, maybe they’d bow to them in pursuit of players, too.

That doesn’t feel like too much of a stretch, does it?

It’s true that such an ownership would allow Liverpool to compete more regularly for such top-level players. But at what cost? In our book, this isn’t a line worth crossing.

That doesn’t mean that FSG won’t feel differently, though. Should a bid ever arrive from the current World Cup hosts, then you can’t say with certainty that the Americans won’t consider it. Worrying times.
