Jurgen Klopp has already had a meeting with the agents of Sofyan Amrabat over a proposed move to Liverpool.

That’s according to French outlet Foot Mercato. They claim that the meeting was a positive one, with further talks scheduled for after the World Cup.

The insinuation is that a January move could be possible, with Klopp reportedly keen to bolster his midfield for the second half of the season.

However, Liverpool are said to be far from the only team interested in Amrabat. Tottenham Hotspur in particular are credited with an interest, having been close to signing the 26-year-old last year.

Inter Milan are also reportedly in the picture, as are ‘other clubs in the English elite.’ One thing that could perhaps swing things in the Premier League clubs’ favour is that Amrabat is said to ‘appreciate’ the chance to play in England.

Amrabat to Anfield gathering pace

This is a transfer that has really seemed to gather pace over the last week or so. Having sprung pretty much out of nowhere, it appears that Liverpool’s interest in Amrabat is genuine.

Foot Mercato tend to be pretty clued in when it comes to transfers. So too does Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenburg, who reported that the Moroccan’s price-tag would be ‘over £25m.’

So, the signs are there that Liverpool are hot on Amrabat’s tail. And to be honest, it makes a lot of sense.

After Fabinho’s lukewarm start to the season, it has become clear that the Reds need a specialist back-up for him. Although they’re slightly different players, Amrabat could surely fill that role. As he wouldn’t cost the earth, he’d be a smart signing as a back-up with potential to be a starter.

Right now, there are differing reports as to whether or not Fiorentina would be willing to let him go in January. Certainly, having watched his displays at the World Cup, they’ll know that they might not be able to hang onto him too much longer.

As a result, it’s well worth Liverpool testing the waters with a January bid. Midfield reinforcements are badly needed at Anfield and if they can snare one of the World Cup’s top performing midfielders, it will be a mighty success.

We suspect this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about this one. Liverpool fans would be advised to watch Amrabat in action for Morocco against Portugal on Saturday.
