Cody Gakpo made history for the Netherlands at the World Cup today. Liverpool reportedly want to sign the player.

Cody Gakpo scored again for the Netherlands on Tuesday as they beat Qatar. The 2-0 win sends them through to the Last 16 as Group winners – and that’s despite facing criticism for their performances.

Gakpo, however, faces no such criticism. He’s been fantastic for his country and has scored in every World Cup game now. As Squawka point out, he’s the first Dutch player to score in the opening three games of a World Cup.

That’s going to drive interest his way, of course. Gakpo is expected to leave PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and a move could happen in January. Teams will certainly line up to make that happen.

In fact, teams were likely lining up anyway. The 23-year-old has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games this season – now he’s got three World Cup goals. His form has been remarkable and that’s coming off a season in which he was Dutch Footballer of the Year.

Dutch journalist Hans Kraay claims that Liverpool want Gakpo. He told ESPN that Pep Lijnders is a big fan and is pushing for a transfer next year. We also think the player’s recent comments removed a potential obstacle for any transfer.

While there’s a long way to go, Gakpo to Liverpool is one to look out for.

Cody Gakpo takes World Cup by storm

Liverpool transfer targets are actually having a very good World Cup. Mohammed Kudus is another who made history just yesterday as he became the first Ghanian to score a brace in a finals game.

Of course, this will be bittersweet for Liverpool if they do want the pair. Their performances show the Reds are right to track them. They also drive further interest their way, however, and almost certainly drive prices up.

Still, Gakpo and Kudus look like fantastic players and we’d be thrilled to see either in Red.
