Cody Gakpo directly talked about his future this weekend after talk of a transfer in January. Liverpool reportedly want the PSV star.
Cody Gakpo was directly asked about potentially leaving PSV Eindhoven after the World Cup. The Dutchman is currently shining very brightly in Qatar, scoring in both games for the Netherlands so far.
His second was a magnificent hit against Ecuador as Gakpo continues his incredible domestic form. Nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games suggests he’s a special player, as well as winning the Dutch Footballer of the Year award last season.
Dutch journalist Hans Kraay claims that Liverpool want Gakpo. He told ESPN that Pep Lijnders is a big fan and is pushing for a transfer next year.
The Reds are hardly the only team linked, though. Manchester United are another who supposedly love Gakpo and talk about his future brought questions in a press conference this weekend.
“As it stands now, I will still be playing for PSV after the winter break,” said Gakpo, per De Telegraaf. “But as I said before the start of the World Cup: we will see what will happen.”
Cody Gakpo hints at future transfer
That certainly sounds like someone who sees his future away from PSV. Gakpo is clearly open to the idea of a transfer next year – potentially as soon as January.
He was expected to leave last summer, of course, after plenty of talk around Leeds United and Arsenal. In the end, no one managed to get both the player and PSV agreeing to anything.

But Gakpo’s form this season only increased interest from elsewhere. Now he’s thriving at the World Cup and drawing more eyes than ever. Another couple of goals and he’ll have everyone lining up for him.
Liverpool would face a fight to get him, then. But it’s a fight that someone’s winning – and why not the Reds?
