‘Not seen as serious’: Club don’t think Liverpool are going to be able to sign their 23-year-old – journalist

Chelsea are still expecting Mason Mount to sign a new contract amid reported interest from Liverpool.

That’s according to journalist Graeme Bailey. Mount has been subject to speculation as he struggles to agree a deal at his boyhood club. But speaking to TeamTalk, Bailey claimed that Chelsea are still confident of keeping the England star.

“Firstly, Chelsea believed that their deal for Mason Mount would be done and dusted by now. They started the same time as Reece James and he put pen-to-paper on his deal in September. However, Mount has thus far not followed,” began the journalist.

“However, Chelsea remain confident that Mount has no intention of pursuing options away from Stamford Bridge and that he will sign his new long-term deal.

“So whilst it is no surprise that we have seen rivals linked like Liverpool – at this stage it is not seen as serious. However, if in a few months’ time the deal is still not agreed, then Chelsea could have a real situation on their hands.”

Liverpool staying on Mount, just in case

Liverpool’s reported interest in Mount has always felt a bit of an outside shot. It could still be that they find themselves in the right place at the right time, but they perhaps won’t be planning for it at this point.

Rather, if the opportunity does arrive, they are positioning themselves to be first in line.

That’s a smart move, as the 23-year-old does seem to be having some difficulty in negotiations. With less than two years left on his agreement, now is the time for Liverpool to do the groundwork.

If they are able to swoop in and poach one of Chelsea’s celebrated academy stars, then it would be quite the coup.

Not only is Mount a regular starter for England, but he’s also potentially perfect for Liverpool’s system. At twenty-three, he still has plenty of room for improvement, too.

All that would usually come at a premium price. But as a result of his contract standoff, Chelsea may be forced to climb down on any evaluation.

If the months do tick along without any agreement, expect this to be a big, rumbling saga over the summer.
