Report: Liverpool could make shock move for ‘terrific’ midfielder, Gerrard’s already said he’s a massive fan

Liverpool are interested in making a surprise approach to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

That’s according to The Guardian, who claim that the Reds are keeping a close eye on Mount’s current contract negotiations.

With just over 18 months to run on his deal, the England star is locked in negotiations over an extension. It’s claimed that there is still optimism at Chelsea that Mount will commit to the club. However, that this will come to pass is reportedly ‘not guaranteed.’

This has led to Liverpool ‘tracking’ the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations. Mount is said to be one of the lowest earners at the London club and is looking for a contract more in-keeping with his status in the team.

Chelsea’s early attempts to placate this have reportedly ‘fallen below his expectations.’ As a result, the door could be open for Liverpool to make their play. Italian giants Juventus are also said to be monitoring the situation.

Liverpool set for Torres payback?

This would be quite the statement move from Liverpool. Although Mount has his detractors, he’s a huge player for Chelsea.

Since making his debut in 2019, the 23-year-old has barely been out of the side. This season alone he’s featured in every single one of Chelsea’s 21 games, starting all but three. In that time, he’s managed two goals and three assists.

Mount has the seal of approval from Reds legend Steven Gerrard as well. Back when he was in charge of Aston Villa, Gerrard labelled himself as a ‘massive fan’ of the Chelsea man via The Metro. Fellow ex-Red Danny Murphy is also a fan, calling Mount ‘terrific.’

If the Reds could finally get some payback for Fernado Torres’ move all those years ago to boot, then this would be well worth it,

By the sounds of it, Mount is exploring his options, too. Why wouldn’t he want to join Liverpool? There are a few familiar faces from the England camp and he could lead the club into a new cycle under Jurgen Klopp.

The problem here is that Mount is still under contract at Chelsea. You can’t imagine a scenario where the Blues would realistically allow him to leave for Anfield.

That also isn’t taking into account the kind of fee that Liverpool would have to pay. He may not have long left on his contract, but they’re unlikely to let one of their poster boys go on the cheap.

As a result, it might be best not to get too excited about this one. But a Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount midfield at Anfield certainly has a ring to it.
