'I like him': Phil Foden says he's a massive fan of 23-year-old Liverpool are reportedly hoping to sign

Manchester City forward Phil Foden has spoken very highly of reported Liverpool transfer target Mason Mount.

Rumours emerged yesterday that the Reds are plotting a surprise move for the Chelsea man, who still hasn’t signed a new contract in West London.

And speaking to The Daily Mail, Foden has raved over Mount’s technical abilities.

“Technically, it’s probably the best England squad I’ve seen. I like Mason Mount a lot and James Maddison as well, the way he plays — players who can receive it in the pocket on the half-turn and can make the killer pass or shoot from distance,” said the City star.

No doubt those same qualities are part of why Liverpool are said to be keeping the 23-year-old in their sights.

Liverpool given Mount encouragement

There have been some rumblings in the past that Mount would be a good option for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp himself has said almost as much.

But never before has there been any realistic hope that the England man would come to Anfield. Now, it seems as though Liverpool have been given some encouragement.

Chelsea’s failure to agree a new deal with their academy graduate is casting doubt over his future.

Mount currently has just over 18 months to run on his contract, which is the same one he signed in 2019. Back then, the Englishman had just returned from a loan spell at Frank Lampard’s Derby County and hadn’t played a senior game for Chelsea.

In the intervening time, Mount has established himself as a key player for both club and country. Winning the Champions League in 2021 was the crowning moment of his career so far.

All of this would, of course, mean that he would come with a substantial price-tag. But Liverpool may feel that with a contract running down, there is a golden opportunity to sign Mount on the relatively cheap.

Foden is clearly a fan, and Klopp is too. The most likely scenario would seem that Mount continues his career at Chelsea, but don’t rule out Liverpool just yet.
