Liverpool reportedly want to sign someone Klopp said was 'for sure a £60m player' in 2019

Jurgen Klopp gave his opinion on Mason Mount over three years ago. Liverpool reportedly want to sign the player from Chelsea.

The Guardian reported on Thursday that Liverpool are considering a move for Mason Mount. This comes as contract talks with Chelsea stall. Mount currently has around 18 months left on his deal.

Thus Liverpool – and Juventus – are looking into Mount. They wonder if they could convince Chelsea to sell, instead of losing him for free in 2024.

And this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. We know Jurgen Klopp rates Mount highly, after comments on the player back in 2019. Klopp was talking about the depth of Chelsea’s squad where, per Sky Sports, he said Mount was ‘for sure a £60m player’.

Nearly four years on, he may get his chance to test that theory.

It’s important to remember that we’re a long, long way from Liverpool’s interest being concrete. The Athletic, for instance, report that talks between Mount and Chelsea have actually found a breakthrough.

It does sound relatively clear, though, that Liverpool would try to sign Mount if he were available. And it’s absolutely something they should try for.

Mount is an exceptional player at his best and one who ticks the right boxes for Liverpool. He’s magnificent at pressing in the final third from an advanced midfield role, consistently winning tackles up against defenders.

That’s exactly what Klopp wants in his side, after all. Add in Mount’s ability to get the ball in the box and it’s easy to see why Liverpool would want him.

Would £60m get him? Usually, no. But if he goes into next summer with one year remaining on his contract, we imagine Chelsea would sell for that. And it would almost certainly be money well spent.
