Real Madrid could do a U-turn and offer reported Liverpool transfer target Marco Asensio a new contract.
That’s according to Marca, who claim that Madrid are now ‘thinking about’ a renewal for the 26-year-old. This was reportedly seen as being ‘impossible’ in the summer, when Asensio was routinely linked with Liverpool.
But the Spain international has reportedly convinced those at the club that he is worthy of an extension. With his current deal set to expire next summer, Asensio would be free to talk to other clubs from January.
Throughout the summer, that looked like being a likely scenario. Marca even claim that Asensio received offers with ‘a lot of money’ during the window.
Now though, the Champions League winner looks set to stay on new terms. Madrid are said to have seen ‘a change in dynamics’ with Carlo Ancelotti now keen to tie him down.
Asensio finally gets his wish
The reports linking Asensio with a move to Liverpool always seemed somewhat fanciful. From the outset, it always felt as though he was merely trying to get a better deal for himself at Real.
Ultimately, that looks like being what was happening after all.
That hasn’t stopped the links in recent times, though. As recently as mid-September, Liverpool were still being credited with an interest in Asensio.
Last month, it was Diario AS who claimed that the Reds were plotting to bring the Spaniard in during the January window.
With this latest news, that now feels like what it always probably was – a non-starter.
As Liverpool struggle to get going in the Premier League this season, they could perhaps do with an injection of something to their forward line.
But Asensio has never seemed like the answer. Hopefully a contract extension soon becomes official, and these rumours can be well and truly put to bed.
