Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio during the January transfer window.
That’s according to Diario AS, who claim that Asensio could make a Liverpool move in January. As a result of his contract situation, the 26-year-old has found himself frozen out at Madrid this season. He has played just 17 minutes in all competitions so far.
But AS now claim that Asensio could find an ‘escape route’ in the winter market. As well as Liverpool, Arsenal and AC Milan are also reportedly in the mix.
With his contract coming to an end next summer, the Spain international could be available for what’s described as a ‘downward’ transfer fee.

Liverpool keeping an eye on the January market
Liverpool were linked with a move for Asensio with some frequency during the summer window. But although the forward was apparently available, no move ever materialised.
That was despite claims from Mundo Deportivo that Liverpool had spoken to the player personally about a transfer.
In truth, the links often felt like a ploy from Asensio’s representatives to get a better deal for their client from Real Madrid. Now that that looks unlikely to happen, perhaps a move is more realistic.
Asensio is pretty versatile but, with a wicked left-foot, he could be utilised in Mohamed Salah’s position. Salah is currently struggling to get going this season. As a result, a back-up for him in January might not be the worst idea in the world.
Carlo Ancelotti called him ‘extraordinary’ via AS as recently as April. As a cheap option, Liverpool could certainly do a lot worse than Asensio.
However, the four-time Champions League winner would perhaps be seen of as a short-term measure – something Liverpool insist they don’t do.
Whether or not Liverpool do any business in January will likely depend on how the season goes up to that point. But with a World Cup coming up and Premier League postponements on the table, they won’t play a lot between then and now.
Judging off The Reds’ performance so far this season then, they could do with some reinforcements mid-season. He may not be top of the list, but Asensio may not be such a terrible option to have.
