Report: Liverpool are one of two clubs to have put an offer to Champions League-winning playmaker

Liverpool are one of two clubs to have made an offer for Marco Asensio, according to reports. The Spaniard could leave Real Madrid.

This comes from Cope in Spain. They claim that Marco Asensio is likely to leave Real Madrid this summer as he enters the final year of his contract. Real have no put a renewal on the table and will listen to offers.

And two of those offers are incoming. Both Liverpool and AC Milan want Asensio and have given terms to the player. There’s a long way to go but these two sides appear to lead any race for the player.

This is now an ongoing transfer saga and one that almost entirely comes out of Spain. AS claimed earlier in June that Liverpool had made Asensio aware of their interest and would try to sign him.

What wasn’t clear, however, was whether that meant negotiating with Real this summer or attempting to pick him up on a free transfer in 2023. That latter might feel preferable.

But Marca claim that Asensio will get a move away this summer if he wants one. Real have put the ball in his court and will offer him a renewal if the player wants one. Though, that would come with an admission that he’s not a starting player.

Liverpool put offer to Marco Asensio

We like the idea of Liverpool signing Asensio as a midfield player who can cover the forward line. At least, that’s the best way to justify a transfer like this.

The apparent asking price of £34m is a lot, though, and Asensio isn’t a young player anymore. It’s not a very ‘Liverpool’ type signing but could be an interesting one.

One big concern, though, is that Liverpool also can’t offer Asensio regular first-team football. We imagine he’d rather sit on the bench in Madrid than at Anfield but that’s purely a guess.

Asensio does look like he’s moving this summer and perhaps Liverpool do really push for a move. We won’t quite hold our breath on this one but it sounds like one to watch.
