Darwin Nunez’s goal against Ajax wasn’t all that stood out to Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool won 3-0 last night. The Uruguayan was excellent.
Darwin Nunez found the net once again for Liverpool against Ajax. That’s now a goal in each of his last four starts and six for the season. Maybe that’s enough for pundits to stop talking about him like some struggling player who requires patience. We doubt it.
Nunez did test everyone’s patience last night, admittedly. He should have scored right before half-time but somehow missed an open goal, crashing his effort off the post. Roberto Firmino, who set him up, couldn’t believe it.
But the big striker found the net after the break. He met an Andy Robertson corner after battling off multiple defenders – just as the Scot planned it, it turns out.
Jurgen Klopp, though, wanted to point out after the game that Nunez was useful all over the pitch. It wasn’t just the goal that impressed the boss.
“Really good game [from Nunez],” he told BT Sport. “A really good game in both directions – helped defending and played with a big heart today, I liked that a lot.
“So hopefully we took him off early enough!”
Darwin Nunez’s goal against Ajax
Now, that last comment is a little joke about last week. Klopp had taken Nunez off against West Ham, believing he’d stopped him before the striker aggravated an injury.
As it turned out, he’d been too late and Nunez couldn’t play against Nottingham Forest. He left the pitch early this time, too, so let’s hope all is well for the weekend.

But yes, Nunez was fantastic here. One highlight from the game came in the second half after his goal. Ajax broke into Liverpool’s box, played a dangerous pass, only for the centre-back to step out to intercept and start a counter-attack.
Closer inspection showed that the centre-back had been Nunez, who had somehow made his way back into the back-four to help. That just about sums him up, honestly.
Another brilliant performance from the Uruguayan, then. We’re loving what he’s bringing at the moment and it still feels like there’s much more to come.
