Roberto Firmino’s reaction to a Darwin Nunez miss tonight had Rio Ferdinand laughing. The Liverpool player couldn’t believe it.
Andy Robertson didn’t brilliantly on 44 minutes tonight to collect a pass from Joe Gomez and beat his marker. The Scot raced towards the Ajax box before finding Roberto Firmino in space.
The Brazilian decided not to shoot himself and instead put it on a plate for Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan had an open goal to net on his fourth consecutive start for Liverpool.
Only, he didn’t. Nunez smashed the tap-in against the post – to the absolute disbelief of everyone watching. No one was more perplexed than Firmino, who didn’t seem to understand what had happened.
Firmino lifted his arms up and started looking around for answers. He’d already had the answer, of course – it was Nunez applying the finish and that means anything can happen.
Firmino’s reaction had Rio Ferdinand laughing in the BT Sport studio. Once Peter Crouch mentioned it, Ferdinand broke down.
“Firmino man, his reaction’s brilliant!” said Ferdinand. “He and Robertson, it’s a beautiful team move. Watch Firmino at the bottom of the screen there!”
Darwin Nunez miss
As is the Darwin Nunez experience, he scored soon into the second half from a much, much more difficult chance. The forward met a Robertson corner to glance a header into the far corner.

How he managed to miss that first one, though, we’ll never truly understand. Nunez is an enigma. A player who scores for fun – that’s now four straight starts he’s scored in – and yet misses the most straightforward chances consistently.
Obviously, you hope things improve in the long-run because Nunez would score two or three a game if he finally converts the routine ones. He’s a special talent. Just also, as Firmino found out, a very frustrating one.
