‘Sensational’ player gets a B+ as we give our early grades for all four of Liverpool’s summer signings

We grade each of Liverpool’s 2022 summer arrivals and Fabio Carvalho tops the trio. The Portuguese playmaker looks like a star.

Liverpool made four major signings this summer as they added to their first-team squad. We’re now at the first international break, so how are they doing? We have a go at grading each of them for their efforts thus far.

Liverpool’s 2022 summer arrivals

Fabio Carvalho – B+

We’re handing Carvalho the highest grade of the quartet. The 20-year-old has been the most obviously successful and, you have to say, the easiest to integrate with the side.

Carvalho was ‘sensational’ in pre-season, says Phil Thompson, and his appearances in the Premier League give us cause for excitement, too. There was a goal against Bournemouth in the 9-0, of course, but the last-minute-and-then-some winner against Newcastle United stands as his finest moment. It’s one he’ll have to work hard to beat, in fact.

The playmaker hasn’t been perfect, however, and he did struggle against Everton. He’s only 20, though, and any early struggles can easily be put down to youth and inexperience with the side.

By the end of the season, Carvalho could easily be an A+.

Darwin Nunez – B-

As an option from the bench, Nunez might be an A. He was the difference as Liverpool beat Manchester City in the Community Shield and rescued the side at Fulham on the opening day. The problem is that he’s been quite uninspiring as a starter.

And that’s an issue when you’ve arrived for such a massive fee. Nunez is supposed to be the star man going forward but spends large swathes of the game struggling to make an impact. When he’s starting, anyway.

We’re certainly more positive than negative on Nunez at Liverpool so far. He’s more likely to come good than flop but the future is still uncertain. The next couple of months are massive.

Calvin Ramsay – N/A

And here’s where this exercise gets silly. Ramsay is yet to feature for Liverpool – in fact, he’s barely trained. The Scot arrived with an injury and is yet to overcome it entirely.

Thus we need to wait before actually scoring Ramsay. If injuries are still a concern by January, then things won’t look good. We don’t doubt his talent, though – once the 19-year-old is playing, he should be a threat for Liverpool.

Arthur – N/A

Now, Arthur has made an appearance for Liverpool but it was only a few minutes in the 4-1 defeat at Napoli. We can’t really judge him on that. His lack of pre-season with the club always made it unlikely that he’d make an immediate impact.

Instead, it’s all about focusing on the six weeks once he’s back. Liverpool do have an option to buy but there could always be bid decisions in January if Arthur doesn’t show enough – or if the side hasn’t improved as a whole.
