Phil Thompson was left in awe of Fabio Carvalho after his display vs RB Leipzig on Thursday. The teenager looks like a star.
Liverpool smashed RB Leipzig on Thursday with a brilliant performance. The headlines belong to Darwin Nunez, of course, after he bagged four second-half goals in the 5-0 win. What a way to answer any critics.
But he wasn’t the only player to shine. There were some fantastic displays here, even though Jurgen Klopp rotated his team throughout the game.
One of those belonged to Fabio Carvalho, who came on for Luis Diaz in the second half. The teenager operated from the left flank, constantly looking to get on the ball and drive at defenders. For a 19-year-old, he looked incredibly exciting – the confidence beams off him.
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is certainly excited. He did punditry for LFCTV and raved about Carvalho after the final whistle.
“Fabio Carvalho is going to be a star,” said Thompson. “There’s something about him when he gets the ball. His awareness on the pitch is nothing short of sensational.”
Fabio Carvalho vs RB Leipzig
Carvalho looks incredibly exciting right now. Thompson went on to compare him to Philippe Coutinho and it’s pretty easy to see that comparison. Carvalho has the same desire to receive the ball anywhere on the pitch and get his head up. He wants to run at defenders, wants to try tricky things and the potential looks enormous.
We think this will be a big year for attacking midfielders at Liverpool anyway. Signing Nunez shows that and Jurgen Klopp seemed to suggest he wants it with his tactics against Leipzig.
Carvalho, then, looks set to be something very special. His performances are impressive anyway, let alone for a 19-year-old who’s only been around for a month. The sky feels like the limit for the Portuguese playmaker and we can’t wait to see how he develops this season.
