Report: ‘Outstanding’ Liverpool player has serious injury, he could miss the next five games

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson may be missing for several weeks after picking up a ‘serious’ hamstring injury.

According to The Times, Henderson could miss five Liverpool games as he recovers from the set-back.

The severity of the injury is reportedly yet to be fully realised, though. The Times report that the 32-year-old will undergo a scan ‘at some stage today.’ That will determine exactly what Liverpool are dealing with.

It’s claimed that it was in fact the injury to Henderson which led to Liverpool deciding a move for Arthur Melo yesterday was needed. Henderson had been forced off the pitch during The Reds 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Henderson to miss some big games for Liverpool

This is bad news for Liverpool. No matter what people think of Henderson’s recent contributions on the pitch, he’s still an important player for the club. Jurgen Klopp called him ‘outstanding’ via The Daily Mail in 2020 and he’ll be disappointed to lose him.

If reports of a five-game absence are correct, the captain will miss some big occassions.

First up, of course, is the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park. Henderson scored in this fixture last year and is always a good man to have in an often physical battle.

Liverpool then travel to Naples in their opening Champions League group game before a home match with Wolves.

Ajax are the next visitors to Anfield as Liverpool continue their shortened European campaign. Finally, The Reds go to Stamford Bridge on September 18th to face Chelsea.

With a fully fit cohort of midfielders, Henderson’s unavailability is navigable. But without Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, things are more difficult.

In that respect it’s easy to see why Arthur has been brought in to plug the gap. It’s a big ask for the Brazilian to step straight into a team as nuanced and well-drilled as Liverpool, though.

The main hope is that Thiago will soon be back after his own hamstring lay-off. According to early projections, he shouldn’t be far away after almost a month out. Fingers crossed that’s the case.
