Jurgen Klopp didn’t hide his delight as two teenagers ‘make big steps’ in senior training at Liverpool this week. It’s one positive of not signing anyone.

Jurgen Klopp spoke openly about Liverpool’s midfield problems this week. The boss admits signing someone new would be ‘really cool’ as injuries continue to cut through the team.

Thiago is injured, of course, along with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones. For a team that arguably needed a new midfielder anyway, calls for a signing have intensified in recent weeks.

But Klopp points out that once everyone is fit, Liverpool have plenty of depth. It’s just ‘crazy’ that so many absences are all at once, he says. There’s no great need to sign anyone, even if it would be a positive for the team. He doesn’t get to pick how much the club spends, and so the need would have to be great.

Fortunately, there are positive that come from the injury situation, even without a signing. Klopp pointed out one this week, sounding thrilled that both Stefan Bajcetic and Bobby Clark are getting senior chances.

“We have a squad where everyone is needed, we are not a 25-26 man squad, but on the other side it has opened up opportunities,” said Klopp, per the Liverpool Echo.

“I am really happy, I am not sure Stefan Bajectic and Bobby Clark would be that close to the first-team at 17, if everyone was available and now they make big steps in training.”

Teenagers shine in Liverpool training

Bajcetic and Clark both appear to be on the cusp of first-team action. The two of them are constantly training with the first-team now, with injuries handing out those chances.

They sat on the bench against Crystal Palace, for instance – and we expect they’ll do the same against Manchester United tonight. There’s half a chance that one of them gets onto the pitch for a debut, too.

Bajcetic, in particular, looks like a future first-team player. There’s an obvious place for him as Fabinho’s backup and his versatility to also play at centre-back would make him a wonderful squad option. 17 might be a little too young to hold down a proper place but over the next few years? We expect to see a lot more of the Spaniard.
