Frenkie de Jong can fix all of Liverpool’s midfield problems and ruin Man United’s summer – RTK View

Frenkie de Jong to Liverpool could be the transfer they’ve needed all along. The Reds are in a midfield crisis.

Liverpool are in something of a midfield crisis right now – it’s funny how quickly things can happen. Jurgen Klopp was completely dismissive of the idea back in July, for instance.

“The last thing that would have crossed my mind is that we have to do this,” he said, per the Athletic. I really don’t understand the discussion.”

His tune after Liverpool’s 2-2 with Fulham was different, however, as he sounded a lot more open to the idea of bringing someone in.

“A transfer must make sense now and in the long term,” he said, again per the Athletic. “We still have enough midfielders. We have to see how we react on that, but for sure, not panic.”

There’s a good reason for that change, too. Thiago went off against Fulham, joining Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Curtis Jones on the absentee list. On top of that, Liverpool’s future in midfield is very unclear – Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita and James Milner are all out of contract next summer. Thiago and Jordan Henderson will be 32 and 33.

Liverpool, then, can actually justify a midfield signing quite easily – should they have the money. Presuming they do, we can’t help but think that the most obvious midfield transfer has been there all along.

Frenkie de Jong to Liverpool

Frenkie de Jong is in a strange situation at Barcelona. Xavi summed it up reasonably well in July, explaining that the Dutchman is a great player but a possibly sacrifice.

“I’ve talked to him,” he said, per AS. “I value him very much. For me he is a fundamental footballer, but then there is the economic situation and fair play.”

Essentially, Barcelona need to sell a player or two in order to register their new signings in La Liga. De Jong, it seems, is at the top of that list. Thus getting the Catalonians to the table is actually very simple.

And as we’ve said before, De Jong is a fantastic player and one who could suit Liverpool wonderfully. He’s the exact kind of player who can add control in a game – something the Reds sorely lacked against Fulham.

If Liverpool do want to expand their midfield with an elite signing – and one who works both short-term and long-term – we can’t imagine there is a better available player than De Jong.

And to top it all off, he’s a player Manchester United have wanted all summer but failed to sign. Liverpool could fix their midfield problem all while striking a blow to their fiercest rivals. That would complete a pretty fantastic summer.
