'He can do much better': Jurgen Klopp thinks Liverpool player looked 'tired' last night, says he was not at his best

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho can play better than he did last night.

The 19-year-old was lively as Liverpool lost 1-0 to RB Salzburg. But speaking post-game via Blood Red: Liverpool FC, Klopp says he is expecting much more from him.

“Fabio, is a fantastic talent, he showed that in moments tonight but he can do much better,” said the Liverpool boss. “But now we talk about players, why should we judge them now, because they are tired, they cannot be the best version of themselves.”

Carvalho has impressed Liverpool supporters with his promising displays in pre-season. As he settles into the team and develops as a player, he’s sure to get even better.

Trying to find Carvalho’s best position

Klopp’s punishing fitness regimes in pre-season is the stuff of legend. During friendly games certainly isn’t the time to judge players, particularly ones as young as Carvalho.

That being said, there has been plenty to be positive about in the young Portuguese’s displays.

Last night, he buzzed around with plenty of industry as he tried to create openings for Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott. Not everything he tried came off, but he was always ready to try something out.

From this early standpoint, it looks as though his best position could potentially be a little deeper for Liverpool.

He lacks the sheer pace of a player like Luis Diaz or Sadio Mane, which is needed to play wide for The Reds. Comparisons have been made with Philippe Coutinho and Carvalho does look like a stylistic match for the Brazilian.

A lot of Coutinho’s best work for Liverpool came when cutting in from the left wing. But he really went to the next level when he moved deeper.

Klopp’s ‘fab four’ of Mane, Coutinho, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were absolutely devastating for half-a-season in 2017. Perhaps the boss’ plan is to deliver on something of a 2.0 with Salah, Carvalho, Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Early signs are that Liverpool have got themselves a gem. He will be given time to find the right position, and when he finds it, he isn’t going to look back.
