John Barnes would have ‘loved’ for Liverpool to beat Tottenham Hotspur to Yves Bissouma this summer. The Reds didn’t get involved.
Tottenham Hotspur pulled off a very smart signing this summer when they brought in Yves Bissouma from Brighton for around £25m (per the Athletic). The midfielder has shone ever since arriving in the Premier League and that price could easily end up looking like a bargain.
In fact, it’s a deal that Liverpool legend John Barnes wishes his old club had gotten involved with. Bissouma, he says, would have been good for the Reds.
“I would have loved to have seen us go for Yves Bissouma from Brighton,” Barnes told the Liverpool Echo.
“I have to say, I think he is a really, really good player and Tottenham have themselves a good signing but with the players we already have I don’t think they need too much.”
Tottenham got Bissouma
Liverpool were actually linked with Bissouma for quite some time – just not in 2022. Go back to last September, though, and the Express were one of several outlets claiming there was an interest there.
And for what it’s worth, we always saw fantastic value in Bissouma. He could have been a solid signing for Liverpool, as Barnes says. On top of that, the Reds could really use reinforcements in midfield and the Ivorian may have fit the bill.
Land Bellingham and no one will give Bissouma a second thought – even if he is a fine player. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is just that good.
