Report: Liverpool are still interested in signing £25m midfielder, he's already said he'd love to play for them

Liverpool are one of the teams still keeping an eye on Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Liverpool’s are among Onana’s ‘admirers’ in the Premier League.

West Ham United, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest are also named as a few of ‘many.’ West Ham have reportedly taken their interest as far as making a £25m for the 20-year-old, which was rejected.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, the report claims that the Belgian’s ‘most likely’ destination is London.

Onana holding out for Liverpool?

Onana being on Liverpool’s radar was first reported back in March. Back then, it was claimed that The Reds’ interest was getting ‘bigger and bigger.’

Since then, the 6ft 5in midfielder continued to be a big part of the Lille team as they finished their title defence in a disappointing 10th place.

The youngster also became a full international for Belgium. He was been called up for the first time in May, and played against Virgil Van Dijk’s Netherlands. In a squad as packed with talent as Roberto Martinez’s team, that’s an impressive feat.

This all paints a picture of a player with enormous potential. It goes without saying that a player like that would have a lot Premier League clubs on alert.

Where Liverpool might have a small advantage is that Onana himself has actually spoken of his interest in a move to the Anfield before.

In an interview with RMC Sport in October 2021, the Senegal-born star suggested that he’d love to play for Liverpool. Onana went as far as saying that he’d ‘sign right away’ if The Reds came in for him.

Liverpool do need a midfielder. Onana may not be the glamour signing of a Bellingham or a Aurelien Tchouameni, but he looks like being a potential superstar.

Wherever he moves this summer, Liverpool would do well to keep an eye on his progress.
