Liverpool are exploring the option of signing 20-year-old Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

This comes from MOPO, who claim that Liverpool’s interest in the player is ‘getting bigger and bigger’.

However, The Reds aren’t the only club reportedly interested in bringing Onana to England. MOPO name West Ham United as one other of ‘several English clubs’ looking at the Belgian.

Who is he

Onana is a defensively-minded midfielder who, in Liverpool terms, could provide some much-needed cover for Fabinho.

At 6ft 6in, he is an enormous presence in the midfield. He can also fill in at centre-back, which is always a a useful trait to have.

Since signing for Lille last summer, he has been slowly eased in at the French champions. Having started just seven of Les Dogues 29 games this season, he has come off the bench a further 17 times.

However, he seems to be growing in responsibility. After being tasked with stopping Chelsea’s stellar midfield in the Champions League last-16 first-leg, Onana has now started the last two Ligue 1 games,.

He scored his first goal for Lille last weekend – claiming the only goal in a 1-0 win over Nantes.

Despite being born in Senegal, he has gone on to represent Belgium at every youth level from under-17 to under-21.

Onana has previously spoken of his desire to move to a club like Liverpool. Speaking to RMC Sport last October, Onana said that he would ‘sign right away’ if Liverpool or Real Madrid came in for him.

Of course every player would love to play for Liverpool, particularly in their current guise under Jurgen Klopp.

But it isn’t often that you hear such an outright statement of desire to play for a certain club. Liverpool should be keeping an eye on Onana’s progress. If he continues to put in some eye-catching performances, perhaps he may soon realise his dream.
