Rio Ferdinand gave a glowing review of Jude Bellingham this week and it shows why he’s worth £100m. Liverpool reportedly want the player.
Liverpool supposedly want a midfielder and Jude Bellingham is on their list. That’s the line from several outlets, with the Liverpool Echo the most recent. They claimed just this week that the Reds are willing to pay a ‘significant’ fee for the teenager.
But just what does significant mean? The suggestion is that Borussia Dortmund want over £100m for Bellingham – that would be a club-record fee. That might be what it takes, however, to secure one of the brightest prospects in world football.
Is he worth that, though? Rio Ferdinand seems to think so as he explained why Manchester United should get involved.
“[Bellingham] plays well beyond his years, has character, intelligence, integrity, you can trust him on the pitch, he makes demands,” he told his YoutTube channel, FIVE. “I’ve watched him closely, he demands of other people at a young age, all these characteristics that I feel Man United need.
“Again, I’m going away from, regardless if he’s got the technical ability, which I think he has, I don’t even look at that too much, I look at the character they’re the reasons I’m buying you.
“The other stuff, the football stuff is brilliant, yeah, and you’ve got to have a certain level of that – I understand – but the overriding factor is the character. Them two (Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice) are the standouts in that sense.”
Jude Bellingham worth £100m
We actually argued late last year that Bellingham was worth £100m and Liverpool should look to pay it. Nothing that has happened since changed our minds on that.
As Ferdinand explains, it’s as much that Bellingham shows remarkable character for his age that makes it a deal worth pursuing. Plenty of youngsters show tremendous talent but having the right mentality to capitalise at the highest level is a rare thing. It’s something Harvey Elliott has consistently shown, for instance, and the Athletic claims that the Reds see it in Curtis Jones.
Liverpool clearly value it, then, but it carries extra importance with their next major midfield signing. That player will almost certainly replace Jordan Henderson long-term – and no one carries a better mentality than the captain.
Bellingham ticks every box, however, and we literally can’t imagine a better fit for that job. A £100m transfer is easily worth it and Liverpool shouldn’t blink at that price.
