Bayer Leverkusen announced on Thursday that Florian Wirtz has extended his contract. It’s a move that should suit Liverpool.
Florian Wirtz now has a contract at Bayer Leverkusen until 2027. That’s an extension on his previous deal that expired in 2026.
While that doesn’t change all that much, it does essentially guarantee that Wirtz remains with Leverkusen for at least this coming season. Perhaps he even sticks around until 2024 – the power is there to hold onto him.
This is a player labelled ‘outstanding’ by Germany boss, Hansi Flick, after all. The teenager is one of the world’s most impressive young players.
Usually, a new contract would make things more difficult. However, we think this could suit Liverpool perfectly.
Florian Wirtz signs new contract
The chances of Liverpool signing Wirtz this summer were essentially nil anyway. It even feels unlikely that they do it next summer – though, it’s possible.
And moving for Wirtz in either 2023 or 2024 makes perfect sense. The attacking midfielder could grow into being the perfect replacement for Roberto Firmino, after all, and the Brazilian’s contract is up next year.
We’re huge fans of the teenager after what he did last season. Wirtz scores goals, creates chances and runs the attack – his all-around game could easily translate to the False 9 role, much as Firmino’s did.
Liverpool, then, will see these two players still on the market as Firmino’s contract runs out. The timing on an ideal replacement couldn’t be better.
