7 key passes & moment of genius vs Celtic: Liverpool won't find better than Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz produced a moment of genius against Celtic on Thursday, with Liverpool surely watching. The Reds won’t find a bigger talent anytime soon.

Sport Bild believes Liverpool have eyes on Florian Wirtz. That’s what they claimed late last month, anyway, listing the Reds among several interested parties.

Not that Wirtz would come cheap. Bayer Leverkusen plan on holding onto him until 2023, apparently, as they see his value soaring above £100m.

And quite honestly, they’re probably right. We’re just about ready to call Wirtz a £100m talent right now, let alone in a year.

Anyone in any doubt simply has to watch Wirtz play – like against Celtic on Thursday evening.

Florian Wirtz vs Celtic

Wirtz was unbelievably good in the Europa League against Celtic. He created an virtually impossible seven chances in the game for teammates, registering two assists.

That alone is enough to raise eyebrows. How many 18-year-old’s are capable of that in a big game?

And yet the statline doesn’t do Wirtz justice. For that, you’ve got to find footage of his assist for Leverkusen’s third – and winning – goal.

Wirtz receives the ball on the left flank and passes inside to Moussa Diaby. Two passes later, he gets it back in the box before feigning a cross on his left.

Instead, Wirtz cuts back onto his right and pauses on the ball. He looks up, spots Diaby on the edge of the box and chips a little pass up for his teammate to catch on the volley.

There are three Celtic players around Diaby. Somehow, Wirtz places the ball perfectly away from all of them in the only place Leverkusen can get a shot off.

It’s genius and the kind of thing you expect from a 36-year-old veteran like Luka Modric – not an 18-year-old kid.

But this is what you expect from Wirtz now. A versatile teenager with seven goals and nine assists in all competitions this season. A kid who creates an average of three chances per game for teammates, yet somehow threatens himself, too.

We just find it impossible to believe Liverpool can find a more talented player right now. While the world watches Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, the Reds could secure themselves a future world-beater in Wirtz.

He’s a sensational player – and there’s a lot more to come.
